Some Suggestions for Meditating Through Psalm 119

By Jason McConahy | Published Tuesday, January 26, 2010

This weekend we will seek to tackle Psalm 119 in our series through The Psalms.  Due to its length, this psalm can seem daunting to tackle as you begin reading through it.  Yet it is full of wonderful reminders as to the treasure that God’s word is for us.

The first step in Bible study is OBSERVATION, or taking the time to notice what is in the passage for the sake of deeper meditation and application.  Here are some observation ideas that will help you ponder how this psalm connects to your own heart and life…

  • Note all the reasons the psalmist exalts the blessing of God’s word.  What does God’s word do for us and to us?

  • Circle action words that describe the psalmist’s relationship to the word of God (ex. “I have treasured…” or “I have rejoiced in…” or “I will meditate…”).  What do these words say about the place God’s word should have in your own life?

  • Note the prayers, or requests that the psalmist makes to God in this psalm.  What can you learn by observing what is on the psalmist’s heart to ask God for?
